Investors Buy Up Metaverse Real Estate in Virtual Land Boom, WSJ

  • WSJ: Real-estate transactions in the metaverse are reaching record highs. We spoke with companies investing in digital real estate to understand the economic model, and why investors are spending millions on virtual property.
  • Yahoo!finance
    • The metaverse is coming. Like all technological innovation, it brings new opportunities and new risks.
    • The metaverse is an immersive virtual reality version of the internet where people can interact with digital objects and digital representations of themselves and others, and can move more or less freely from one virtual environment to another. It can also involve augmented reality, a blending of virtual and physical realities, both by representing people and objects from the physical world in the virtual and conversely by bringing the virtual into people’s perceptions of physical spaces.

Some GK juices

  • Nasdaq:
    • Microsoft is one of few firms that has been able to defy the growth-waning effects of corporate aging. Like many members of the FAANG basket, Microsoft has had to reinvent itself many times.
    • Indeed, FAANG isn't just an arbitrary selection of the names atop the S&P 500. They're a basket of growth companies that can evolve with the times. In essence, winners that, one way or another, find ways to keep winning.
    • Microsoft: Into the Metaverse.
      • The metaverse probably still feels like an abstract concept unless you've tried an Oculus Rift or Quest headset. For those who own a VR headset, though, the opportunities at hand are almost palpable.
      • Meta may be seen as a frontrunner to the emerging trend, but arguably, Microsoft may be the better bet. Unlike some tech titans that aim to preserve their startup culture, Microsoft only seeks to enter a new realm if there's a good shot at getting a great bang for its invested buck.
      • Undoubtedly, when Microsoft gets into a new field, you know it means business. Although we just got a teaser of what to expect from Microsoft in the metaverse, investors should not discount its potential to dominate the "metaverse for work" category. g-f(2)658
  • WSJ:
    • Accounting firms are following the example set by other companies to launch operations in the metaverse, a digital space where players simulate real-life activities from shopping to gaming to business consulting.
    • Businesses across industries, including real estate, technology and cryptocurrency, have been purchasing digital land on platforms such as Decentraland and the Sandbox. Executives have started drafting business plans for operating in those virtual worlds, which are typically conceived by videogame developers.
    • Prager Metis plans to use its virtual building to advise companies and other new and existing clients on tax and accounting issues, Chief Executive Glenn Friedman said.
    • Other accounting firms are also venturing into the metaverse. PricewaterhouseCoopers in late December said its Hong Kong unit acquired virtual real estate in the Sandbox, a subsidiary of software firm Animoca Brands Corp., for an undisclosed amount.
  • VentureBeat:
    • “Metaverse” is the current label to apply to technologies that might have been described as 3D social worlds, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, or XR (a superset of VR, AR, and MR) at past shows.
    • That said, there are some innovations in play, such as notions of how the 3D successor to the web might be built on a “web3” blockchain rather than contained within the network of a mega-vendor like Facebook/Meta. And to the extent that the metaverse is linked to the advance of immersive technologies like VR headsets, CES featured announcements like Qualcomm partnering with Microsoft on processors to power lightweight VR/AR headsets integrated with the Microsoft Mesh business metaverse.
  • yahoo!finance:
    • By donning virtual reality headsets or augmented reality glasses, people will be able to socialize, worship and work in environments where the boundaries between environments and between the digital and physical are permeable. In the metaverse, people will be able to find meaning and have experiences in concert with their offline lives.
    • As terrorism researchers at the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center in Omaha, Nebraska, we see a potential dark side to the metaverse. Although it is still under construction, its evolution promises new ways for extremists to exert influence through fear, threat and coercion.
  • Forbes:
    • The coming rise of the Metaverse represents a new frontier for privacy, trust, and identity. A persistent virtual world where communications, finance, and personal profiles coalesce under one interoperable platform.
    • In the rapidly approaching world of Web 3.0 applications and services that underpin the Metaverse, it’s more important than ever to have a portable and composable digital identity that preserves privacy and provides security. One that won’t just offer proof of who you are and what you can access but also serves as a non-custodial cache for your virtual assets.
    • New Technologies, Models Pave the Way. Luckily, this is already possible via Self-Sovereign ID (SSI). SSI is enabled by a system of trusted identifiers linked to real-world verification data, such as biometrics, and it is all made entirely enforceable thanks to an underlying blockchain and the implementation of Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs). Essentially, ZPKs facilitate the ability for one party to verify that the data from another party is accurate without revealing any personal information. This, along with W3C verifiable credentials, decentralized identifiers (DIDs), and encrypted communication standards, can create SSIs that are fully compatible across a multitude of platforms.
    • Importantly, however, for the metaverse, and the potential it offers, to come to fruition, it needs to be built correctly from the beginning — and that’s exactly what SSIs stand to provide this new, digital world.
