Get Ready for Quantum Computing

Some Golden Knowledge (GK) juice

  • Quantum Computing is fast transitioning from a scientific possibility to a technical reality.
  • Today, the field is advancing in important areas, but many challenges lie ahead. We can’t be sure if recent progress will continue, decline, or increase.
  • What is clear, though, is that given the potential magnitude of impact quantum computers could have on the world, it is time for business leaders to start engaging with the technology.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

The MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE)

The MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE) is a team of visionary, internationally recognized thought leaders and researchers examining how people and businesses work, interact, and will ultimately prosper in a time of rapid digital transformation.

Technology advances quickly, yet organizations and skills tend to move at a slower pace. In the coming decades, the divide between swiftly evolving technology and the slower pace of human development will grow wider as exponential improvements in artificial intelligence, robotics, networks, analytics, and digitization affect more and more of the economy and society.

Inventing effective organizations and institutions suited for the digital economy is the grand challenge of our time, and for MIT in particular. Our research helps companies adapt to new ways of doing business in the digital economy. It helps NGOs and other organizations understand how the digital transformation is affecting society and everyday life. And it helps people become more productive and thrive in a time of great and uncertain change.

The IDE is part of the MIT Sloan School of Management. With its core strengths in technology and innovation, no institution is better equipped to examine the digital economy. No other initiative or center in the world is exploring the effects of the digital economy with the same determination, focus, perspective or purpose as the IDE. We are also closely aligned with MIT’s Innovation Initiative, working together to enable inclusive innovation.

Our team is led by MIT Sloan’s Sinan Aral and Andrew McAfee.

Extra-condensed knowledge

Lessons learned, MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy

Some GK juice

  • In an article published in the current Harvard Business Review, co-authors, Jonathan Ruane, Andrew McAfee, and William Oliver dive into the topic and explain why businesses need to understand — and seriously assess — the implications of this emerging computing paradigm for their organizations and businesses. Ruane is a lecturer in the global economics and management group at the MIT Sloan School of Management and a research scientist at MIT’s Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE). McAfee is a founder and co-director of the IDE, and William Oliver, is professor of electrical engineering and computer science and physics at MIT.
  • There are myriad technical challenges to developing scalable and reliable quantum computers that will be commercially transformative.
  • When we see the public sector, academia, and industry getting involved and investing in a technology at this rate, breakthroughs often happen. There is no physics-based reason why quantum progress is not achievable. Many of the processes we are trying to harness already exist in the natural world — that’s why it is such an exciting space.
  • There is already a shortage of talent. Up-skilling of data scientists to be quantum-capable is a great way to address this within an organization. Application developers will have to be retrained, too, and executive buy-in is needed. Advocates must get the conversation started while speaking realistically about the benefits.
  • I see four primary talent needs: data specialists, quantum developers, use-case identifiers who understand both the business needs and the technology, and executive sponsors.
