Extra-condensed knowledge

Relevant golden knowledge juice from the 10 rare containers of golden knowledge (GK) in digital transformation (DT).

  1. Let’s Face It, LinkedIn Might Be the Best Social Network Right Now, Joanna Stern, February 9, 2022, The Wall Street Journal, WSJ.
    • At least once a day I open the app, not to look for a job or to wish a colleague from a decade ago a happy work anniversary. But because—unlike in my Facebook, Twitter or Instagram feeds—the conversation is meaningful, the people are civil and there’s no politics. At least not anymore.
    • LinkedIn recently started testing a no-politics setting, which I enabled. It filters out content about political parties and candidates, election outcomes, ballot initiatives and more. The Microsoft -owned company has made the setting available to some U.S. users over the past few months.
    • But here’s the shocker: It isn’t just seasoned professionals flocking to this decidedly uncool corner of the internet.
    • “We’re seeing a lot of Gen Z join the network right now,” Mr. Roslansky told me, adding that job moves are up nearly 70% for users ages 16 to 22, vs. just 7% for users over 55. “We’re seeing the platform evolve much more to cater to them.”
    • Calling All Creators
      • Whether it’s your killer Excel formula or big thoughts on payroll management, your expertise is in demand. LinkedIn wants you to share it as a “creator”—yes, the word tech companies have fallen in love with to describe people who, well, create videos, posts and other internet stuff.
      • If you want to share more and build a following on LinkedIn, you can now turn on a new “Creator Mode.” (You should see it on your profile page, under Resources.) This lets people follow you, instead of just the usual “connect.”
  2. What’s the Optimal Workplace for Your Organization?, Maria Roche and Andy Wu, February 9, 2022, Harvard Business ReviewHBR.
    • The opportunity to reimagine your workplace doesn’t come along often. Today, too many managers are letting this opportunity slip by, letting their organizations revert back to where they were before the pandemic. Even worse, some are floundering in an ambiguous workplace mixing the past and the future while suffering from all the tradeoffs between workplace configurations. It is time to design your organization for the future based on your size and goals for growth.
    • Our research suggests that managers need to account for two key organizational features to identify their most effective working model: size and growth orientation. Depending on where an organization falls on those two dimensions, we recommend that managers implement one of four stylized working configurations: a stand-alone office or campus, hybrid with flexible space, coworking environment, or fully remote. Each has benefits when it comes to two difficult trade-offs: collaborative creativity versus individual productivity, and the agility to change and expand versus coordination.
    • Mapping Your Needs to Your Office
      • Based on our research, we have identified two questions about where your organization is going and where it is today to help you determine which of the four models is right for you. First, what is your strategy for future growth? Second, what is the size of the organization you need right now?
  3. How an Old U.S. Antitrust Law Could Foster a Fairer Retail SectorBrian Callaci and Sandeep Vaheesan, February 9, 2022, Harvard Business Review, HBR.
    • As U.S. lawmakers look for ways to address problems of concentration and monopolization led by a new generation of retail giants — Walmart, Amazon, and others — they should take a hard look at dusting off Robinson-Patman, which is still on the books.
    • To be sure, Robinson-Patman is not a complete solution to the buyer power problem — the law does not cover captive suppliers and may not apply to suppliers based outside the United States. And the law has shortcomings. Its text is awkward and features many ambiguities, and the burden of compliance was historically placed on suppliers being squeezed by powerful buyers, instead of the powerful buyers themselves. Nonetheless, the neglect and disparagement of this law had profound effects on our political economy and contributed to the growth and ultimate dominance of firms such as Amazon and Walmart and the withering of small and midsize manufacturing firms in their supply chains. Just as they once reined in the A&P, members of Congress and federal antitrust regulators should look to the Robinson-Patman Act again to build a fair retail sector.
  4. Disney Soars as Online Viewers Jump, Parks Boost Earnings, Christopher Palmeri, February 9, 2022, Bloomberg.
    • Walt Disney Co. reported first-quarter sales and earnings that handily beat analysts’ forecasts, buoyed by its namesake theme parks. Subscribers to the flagship streaming service Disney+ jumped to 129.8 million.
    • Earnings increased to $1.06 a share, the Burbank, California-based entertainment giant said Wednesday, beating the 57-cent average of analysts’ estimates. Sales in the period ended Jan. 1 increased to $21.8 billion, topping expectations of $20.8 billion.
    • The big surprise was new subscriptions to Disney+, which came in at 11.8 million, above the 8.17 million that Wall Street had projected.
  5. How The Crypto Couple Went From Wannabe Tech Luminaries To Targets In The Biggest Financial Seizure In Justice Department History, David Jeans and Cyrus Farivar, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • Heather Morgan and her husband, Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein, seemed to lead a successful life as tech entrepreneurs and thought leaders. Lichtenstein invested in startups alongside heavyweights like Marc Benioff and had launched his own company backed by Mark Cuban. Morgan styled herself as a prolific thought leader, posting online articles about women in leadership, and even had an alter ego as a goofy YouTube rapper called Razzlekhan, who talked about success and money.
    • But they had a secret, according to investigators with the IRS. Morgan, 31, and her husband, Lichtenstein, 34, were arrested in New York on Tuesday and charged with trying to launder $3.6 billion in bitcoin stolen by hackers from the Bitfinex exchange six years ago.
    • In August 2019, Morgan gave a lecture on “How to Social Engineer Your Way Into Anything” to a group in New York City. When asked by an audience where the line should be drawn in social engineering, Morgan responded: “I do believe that the ends justify the means sometimes,” she said. “My end goals aren’t bad or evil. I’m not trying to scam someone out of money or get someone hurt in any way.”
  6. Five questions to ask before undergoing a digital transformation, Nagarajan Muthusamy, February 9, 2022, Dallas Business Journal
    • Recently, my team and I underwent a digital transformation. As launch time drew closer, I was so excited that we would soon be able to transform the business and bring lasting change in customer experience, operational efficiency and topline growth. This is the story about how we got it wrong in our first deployment.
    • Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we switched from trying to have the right answers to asking the right questions. Below are some of those right questions that you can ask yourself as you begin a digital transformation to avoid making the same mistakes we did.
      1. What is possible versus what could be profitable?
      2. How will the digital transformation change transaction volumes and the average value of those transactions?
      3. What are the sources of customer value and how will that value translate into revenues?
      4. How do we transition to the right (digital) mindset?
      5. How will we prioritize relationships over transactions?
  7. Do You Need a Career Coach?, Marlo Lyons, February 9, 2022, Harvard Business ReviewHBR.
    • The author presents five reasons you might consider hiring a career coach and five tips on how to choose the right one for you.
    • Coaching fees are not regulated. Career coaches could charge as little as $5 when in training to more than $1,000 per session. Sessions range from 30 minutes to one hour. Some coaches charge extra for resume revisions, whereas others include that in the overall price. Understand exactly what you’re receiving for the cost. Also, know how often you’ll meet either in person or via telephone or video and whether the coach will answer questions outside of scheduled sessions.
    • Once you’ve gathered all this information, you can determine if career coaching and a specific coach is right for you. But before deciding to hire a coach, make sure you’re ready and willing to put in the work, because only you can achieve your goals.
  8. Digital transformation is great, if only the technology was ready, Joe McKendrick, February 9, 2022, ZDNet.
    • That's one of the key takeaways from a recent survey of 400 IT executives, conducted by IDG and underwritten by Insight Enterprises. There is wide agreement that IT modernization is sorely needed before digital transformation can begin in earnest. Eighty-nine percent of IT executives admit that existing infrastructure, operations and culture are constraining innovation and strategic business growth. At least half the survey group, 49% say their IT infrastructure inhibits business growth "to a great extent."
    • Almost all the IT executives also complain about lack of collaboration between teams in reaching digital transformation goals. Eighty-seven percent indicate that the working relationship between developers and traditional IT is "hindering their ability to take full advantage of digital transformation."
    • Skills and knowledge gaps also hold things back -- 44% cite skills and knowledge gaps as the top constraint inhibiting innovation.
    • Still, 90% expect IT modernization to have either a transformative or significant impact on their organization's long-term growth, including 29% of those that have not yet begun the process.
  9. 87% of Enterprises Now Pursuing Digital Transformation, Gaining Measurable Business Benefits Even in Early Stages, Business Wire, February 9, 2022, yahoo!finance.
    • The survey, "The Path to Digital Transformation: Where IT Leaders Stand in 2022," examined how IT priorities and budgets are shifting to enable business innovation and growth in the face of sea changes triggered by technology advances as well as the ripple effects of the pandemic. Respondents included 400 senior IT decision makers employed at companies with 1,500 or more employees across a wide range of industries.
    • The majority of enterprises are actively pursuing digital transformation to gain a competitive edge in today’s increasingly digital business environment, and even the 41% in the early stages of the effort are seeing a measurable return on investment, according to a new IDG Research Services survey commissioned by Insight Enterprises (NASDAQ:NSIT).
    • Nine out of 10 survey respondents reported that digital transformation has accelerated over the last 18 months, with dramatic changes in priorities led by new workplace and business realities.
  10. The 10 IT Trends That Will Change The Way We Do BusinessEd Fox, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • The global pandemic has forever altered the way we’ll work and live moving forward. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that innovation and ingenuity have continued to move forward as organizations of all sizes have adapted and continued to digitally transform work. As technological advances continue to accelerate, it should bring excitement and hope as we close the chapter on another year, begin anew in 2022 and look forward to great things to come.
    • Increased comfort with digital interactions will breathe new life into VR/AR. While still mostly theoretical, the recent announcement of the creation of a "metaverse" and the Webex Hologram will certainly help usher in VR/AR adoption and play a greater role in how we live and work. 5G will bring wider bandwidths and faster speeds, continuing to propel everything from telemedicine and remote surgeries to fully immersive experiences to the workplace and the home.
