Opportunities, Lessons learned, Risks, Warnings and Challenges

Some golden knowledge juice from the 10 rare containers of golden knowledge (GK) in digital transformation (DT).
  1. Digital Transformation: A New Roadmap for SuccessLinda A. Hill, Ann Le Cam, Sunand Menon, and Emily Tedards, February 08, 2022, Harvard Business School, HBS.
    • Is your company reaping the rewards of digital transformation yet? Linda Hill and colleagues offer seven guiding principles for transformations at any stage—nascent, progressing, or stalled.
      1. Recognize the emotional side of digital transformation
      2. Align around a customer-centric narrative
      3. Build a data-informed culture by upskilling talent
      4. Manage the power dynamics that come with data
      5. Design for inclusive and agile problem-solving
      6. Encourage an outside-in and collaborative ecosystem perspective
      7. Safeguard ethics and take a proactive approach to governance and compliance
    • Organizational change is never easy, but our roundtable discussions made clear that achieving digital maturity can be an especially arduous journey, even for digital-first companies. While the COVID-19 pandemic has made digital transformation an even more urgent need, companies must also morph iteratively to keep up with the speed of emerging technologies. It’s a process of continuous learning and pivoting to adapt to an evolving competitive landscape.
    • Digital transformation is more about people than technology
      • While these seven principles might seem obvious to some, we’ve found that few companies have fully internalized them. True adoption requires conviction at the top of the organizational chart and a spirit of determination that permeates every level below. And real success will come from the details—how the company weaves these concepts into its corporate DNA and day-to-day operations.
  2. Why Outside Perspectives Are Critical for Innovation BreakthroughsJean-Louis Barsoux, Cyril Bouquet, and Michael Wade, February 08, 2022, MIT Sloan Management Review, MIT SMR.
    • Lessons from the story of Dr. Patricia Bath, the inventor of modern cataract surgery and the first African American woman to receive a medical patent.
    • Innovation is widely viewed as an engine of progress — not only for driving economic growth, but also for bringing vital improvements in a variety of domains, from science and medicine to inequality and sustainability.
    • There are lessons in this story for all of us. Outsiders like Bath are able to see the world with fresh eyes and can bring forth ideas and solutions that challenge our conventional thinking. We need to explicitly pay attention to these perspectives. Yet our inherent biases, low expectations, and skepticism often get in the way. So, as a first step, we need to acknowledge our own biases so that we can keep them in check and strive to enrich our thinking.
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has provided a prime opportunity to do this. The great shifts that have occurred in work culture, social systems, and wellness have generated a hotbed of new ideas, many of which have come from nontraditional sources. We would be well served to listen to them.
  3. 6 Signs It’s Time to Leave Your JobJohn Coleman, February 08, 2022, Harvard Business Review, HBR.
    • There are six signs it may be time to move on from your current role or career. First, it’s no longer encouraging your growth. Second, you’ve achieved what you set out to achieve. Third, you actively look for ways to procrastinate or avoid your job. Fourth, you regularly approach work with dread or have feelings of exhaustion and burnout. Fifth, your job is causing you to develop bad habits that don’t align with your values. Finally, your workplace has become harmful to your physical or emotional health.
    • There are, of course, other signs. And again, trying earnestly to reconceive of your work and craft it to be more purposeful is always the best first course if you are feeling stagnant. But letting go of the old is part of keeping life fresh and allowing purpose to change over time. Your life is in your hands, something more and more people seem to be realizing. And the Great Resignation may be just the opportunity you need for a great reinvention.
  4. Tesla gets first place in inaugural Industrial Digital Transformation Report, February 08, 2022, Simon AlvarezTeslaRati.
    • ARC Advisory Group, a technology and research firm founded in 1986, recently released its inaugural Industrial Digital Transformation Top 25 special report. The report analyzes companies across several industries and ranks them based on how well they excel at integrating digital technologies in all areas of their business. Tesla took the number one spot in ARC’s inaugural list.
    • As per ARC’s report, companies that do well in the integration of digital technologies fundamentally change the way they operate and deliver value to their customers. Marianne D’Aquila, ARC’s director of research, noted that companies that lead in digital transformations usually gain a competitive advantage in their respective industries.
    • ARC developed a rather rigorous process to identify and rank the companies in its inaugural Industrial Digital Transformation Top 25 report. The ranking covered three main components of a business — financial indicators, transformation indicators, and collective intelligence. Financial indicators were analyzed by studying a company’s publicly-available financial data, transformation indicators were scored based on software and Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) data, and collective intelligence was based on selection and ranking by ARC’s own analysts.
    • Tesla Achieves The Top Ranking In The Industrial Digital Transformation Top 25 Report, Steve Banker, February 07, 2022, Forbes.
  5. Companies Are Racing Toward Digitalization To Unlock Value And Improve The Customer And Employee ExperienceJack Kelly, February 08, 2022, Forbes.
    • MuleSoft, a division of Salesforce, in collaboration with Deloitte Digital, surveyed 1,050 global IT leaders on the state of connectivity and digital transformationThe study revealed that IT teams continue to struggle with a surging volume of projects, as an increasing number of business leaders demand a companywide API strategy.
    • Digitalization, simply put, is the use of digital technologies to change a business model. The goal is to make this pivot to unlock value, provide new revenue and improve the flow of communications and interactions. Done correctly, it will serve both customers and employees.
    • There is a race in which organizations are under increased pressure to transform themselves.  Companies could lose “on average $7 million by failing to complete digital transformation initiatives.”
    • “Digital agility is essential to successful transformation, allowing organizations to drive innovation at scale, deliver new initiatives faster and create the experiences that customers want,” said Kurt Anderson, managing director and API transformation leader at Deloitte Consulting. Anderson added, “A modern strategy that combines integration, API management and automation is central to achieving digital agility. It enables organizations to easily connect and integrate their data, applications and devices to create new digital capabilities and drive transformation projects.”
  6. We’re Good at Motivating Others, but What About Ourselves?, February 8, 2022, Knowledge@Wharton.
    • Wharton’s Angela Duckworth talks to Ayelet Fishbach, author of the new book 'Get It Done,' which offers a framework for setting and attaining goals.
    • There are plenty of books that teach how to influence the behavior of others, but anyone who’s set a personal goal knows it’s a lot tougher to apply those lessons inward. Ayelet Fishbach, a behavioral science and marketing professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, has written a new book that can help. Get It Done: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation, which was released in January, offers a framework for setting and attaining goals, working through roadblocks, and keeping the temptation to quit at bay.
    • “It’s really important to set goals that are not so abstract that you cannot come up with a plan,” Fishbach said during a virtual interview with Wharton professor Angela Duckworth about the book.
  7. Turn the “great resignation” into the “great renegotiation”Denise Hamilton, February 08, 2022, strategy+businesss+b.
    • Encouraging employees to approach you with their wish lists might seem counterintuitive, but it may just be the key to retention.
    • The events of these past two years have been like a tornado, throwing everything into disarray. Many businesses have been trying to get back to normal. But there’s no going back. Workers are leaving their employers in droves, seeking greater fulfillment and better pay, among other opportunities. This great resignation, though, could instead be a great renegotiation. Leaders have a chance now to redesign their organizations in a way that’s more exciting and fulfilling for employees.
    • The kinds of changes people seek collectively could help reshape the entire organization for the better. Giving employees a chance to bounce ideas off of one another is a great way to build solutions.
    • Business leaders must open new opportunities for their staff to help shape their work lives—and, by extension, the organization as a whole—and reap the rewards.
  8. Make Your Employer Brand Stand Out in the Talent Marketplace, Bryan Adams, February 08, 2022, Harvard Business ReviewHBR.
    • At a time when companies are competing for top talent during the Great Resignation, a company’s employer branding can be incredibly influential in a candidate’s consideration of working there. The author outlines the three main tenets of employer branding — reputation, employer value proposition, and employee experience — and how to optimize each one.
    • Many of the elements on which people base their career decisions are out of your control. Cultivating employer branding isn’t. It’s the only tangible advantage you have in today’s wildly competitive environment and has to be an integral focus. Taco Tuesdays and office happy hours aren’t enough to attract the best talent. Invest in something that is.
  9. Lessons in Sustainable Change Management: #deCOALonize Kenya, Wamaitha Mungai, founder of Sustainability Challenger (EMC 2021), Lee White, INSEAD Thesis Supervisor, and Zoe Kinias, INSEAD Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour,  February 08, 2022, Insead Knowledge.
    • The campaign to prevent the construction of a coal power plant on an idyllic island in the Indian Ocean.
    • At the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta showcased his country’s progress on climate action with global leaders, in particular committing to a 32 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Kenya is blessed with abundant renewable energy resources and is Africa’s leading producer of geothermal energy. It is surprising, then, that the government had previously planned to establish East and Central Africa’s first coal-fired power plant in Lamu, a tranquil island off the northeast coast of Kenya.
    • Success for the community
      • The COP26 coal pledge highlighted the struggle world leaders face in balancing their demand for energy and climate action. The need for effective sustainable change management practices is substantial and will increase.
  10. 3 Strategies to Recruit and Support First-Gen College Grads, Katie Wullert, Chelsea Schein, and Aaron Franklin, February 08, 2022, Harvard Business ReviewHBR.
    • The authors share the results of a series of surveys with thousands of students and dozens of recruiters across the U.S., and they highlight three ways employers can better engage with this underutilized talent pool: End pay-to-play internships, rethink what constitutes “relevant” experience, and provide the mentorship and career coaching that first-gen candidates may be less likely to have access to on their own.
    • At the end of the day, there is little difference between a process that misses a potential candidate and one that misses a candidate’s potential. For Stefany — and for the millions of first-gen students who graduate every year — employers who understand and address the unique challenges these candidates face can help bridge the gap. And as competition for top entry-level talent grows fiercer, employers stand to benefit more than ever from access to a large pool of highly qualified yet often overlooked candidates.
