Extra-condensed knowledge

Relevant golden knowledge juice from the 10 rare containers of golden knowledge (GK) in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

  1. The Data Boom Is Here — It’s Just Not Evenly Distributed, Viktor Mayer-Schönberger and Thomas Ramge, February 9, 2022, MIT Sloan Management Review, MIT SMR.
    • The leading digital platforms control access to an increasing share of the world’s data. Here’s why we need policies that level the playing field.
    • For many innovators exploiting digital technologies — especially AI and machine learning — great ideas need to be paired with relevant data to create a viable product. Without mountains of suitable training data, safe and reliable autonomous vehicles will remain a pipe dream. The same is true for AI-based medical diagnostics or predictive maintenance systems. We require great volumes of data to develop voice and image recognition, as well as for use cases such as fraud detection, product recommendation, and protein folding. Whether a brilliant idea can make “a little dent in the universe” (to quote Steve Jobs) or at least be turned into a successful product increasingly depends on access to data.
    • Access to data is the antidote to Schumpeter’s nightmare of a world deprived of innovation through the concentration of resources in the hands of a powerful minority. It enhances competition, enables great ideas, and ensures sustainable economic and societal progress. Mandating it will deliver an unprecedented data dividend.
  2. Imagining Furniture (and the Future) With AI: IKEA Retail’s Barbara Martin CoppolaSam Ransbotham and Shervin KhodabandehME, MYSELF, AND AI, EPISODE 307, February 8, 2022, MIT Sloan Management Review, MIT SMR + BCG.
    • Drawing on previous experience working in nine countries for organizations like Google and Samsung, Barbara Martin Coppola joined IKEA Retail as its chief digital officer to oversee the furniture retailer’s digital transformation, improve its customer experience, and foster the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
    • In this episode of the Me, Myself, and AI podcast, hosts Sam Ransbotham and Shervin Khodabandeh speak with Barbara about how she empowers cross-functional collaboration and “testing, and iterating, and trying, failing, and starting again” to realize successful technology projects. She also shares the context behind some recent customer-facing AI tools the company has launched to assist customers through the buying process and free up front-line workers to focus on customer engagement instead of operational tasks.
  3. The Great Resignation gives birth to digital employees powered by AI, ML, and RPA, Taryn Plumb, February 7, 2022, VentureBeat.
    • Tara is a sophisticated bot — complete with a name, face, personality, CV, and deep industry expertise and experience. She is one of six digital “colleagues” that have been developed and deployed by intelligent automation and robotic process automation (RPA) company WorkFusion.
    • Welcome to the new digital workforce
      • “Enterprises today in every sector are facing the greatest labor shortage in history, and it’s even more difficult to source, hire, and train knowledge workers who can perform complex jobs that require numerous daily data-driven decisions,” said WorkFusion CEO Adam Famularo.
      • Companies across numerous industries are increasingly relying on digital workers to automate and streamline various tasks — and, in turn, these virtual employees powered by AI, machine learning, RPA, and analytics are becoming even more advanced.
      • According to Forrester’s “Future of Work,” automation will transform 80% of jobs in some way by 2030. More Fortune 1000 Company executives are going to look to AI, bots, robots, and smart technologies to address the employee experience, compensation, and regulatory pressures, Forrester anticipates.
      • WorkFusion is one of a growing number of companies going beyond traditional RPA to meet this demand. Others in the space include Digital Workforce, Thoughtful Automation, and Tangentia.
  4. Navrina Singh Founds Credo AI To Align AI With Human ValuesBruce Rogers, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • Worldwide business spending on AI is expected to hit $50 billion this year and $110 billion annually by 2024, according to technology research firm IDC.
    • Yet despite its massive growth and potential, AI presents three major areas of ethical concern for society according to Michael Sandel, who teaches a course in the moral, social, and political implications of new technologies at Harvard: privacy and surveillance, bias and discrimination, and perhaps the deepest, most difficult philosophical question of the era, the role of human judgment.
    • Founded in 2020, Credo AI is an AI platform designed to address these issues.
    • The company was founded with $5.5 million in seed funding led by Decibel Partners, along with Village Global and AI Fund, by founder and CEO Navrina Singh and her co-founder and CTO Eli Chen. The pair were inspired by the mission to help organizations build AI aligned with human values.
    • One of her bosses from Qualcomm was recruited by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and brought Singh along to help them start thinking about commercialization of artificial intelligence technology.
  5. How Technology Is Transforming Business Payments, Rohit Gupta, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • The pandemic has been the single most significant business disruptor in decades.
    • Enterprises scrambled as long-established business processes were rendered obsolete seemingly overnight.
    • Companies accelerated the digitization of their customer exchanges, supply-chain interactions and internal operations by three to four years. As a result, their deployments of digital products accelerated by an incredible seven years.
    • The rise of AI in the professional world could not have come at a better time. An unfortunate result of the pandemic is a much leaner workforce. With fewer employees, tasks must be streamlined for smarter work. Integrating AI allows for a smaller staff while also reducing the margin of error. More trivial tasks such as payment posting and remittance tracking, both of which often have a high risk of error, could be handled quickly and flawlessly by technology.
    • A key takeaway from the digital advancements throughout the pandemic is that technology is moving incredibly fast. Companies need to stay ahead of the curve to remain relevant. Look to technology as you grow for a much more streamlined approach to payments and a reduced margin of error.
  6. DataRobot’s Former CEO Launches Two Startups And A VC Fund From Ukraine, Kenrick Cai, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • As CEO of artificial intelligence company DataRobot until last March, Jeremy Achin prepared various contingency plans for his 1,000-plus employees, such as how to weather the pandemic’s impact on his company’s sales. But he never had to prepare for a full-scale war, as he has been doing since he landed in Ukraine two weeks ago to support his new ventures there.
    • Noting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s massing of troops on the border and repeated threats to invade Ukraine, Achin has prepared first-aid kits, supply packs and relocation plans to Portugal or Bulgaria for the teams behind his new projects.
    • Even amid the growing geopolitical instability, Achin is announcing the new ventures he’s been working on since his resignation from DataRobot, the $6 billion valuation company he cofounded in 2012. A self-professed micromanager, Achin plans to be neck-deep in each project. He is serving as a lead investor for Cortical Ventures, his new $50 million venture fund, and as CEO of two seed-stage AI companies: NeoCybernetica, which raised $30 million, and hOS, which is backed by $12.8 million in deals both led by NEA, the top VC firm shareholder in DataRobot.
    • Whatever the case, Achin has Ukraine squarely in his future plans, saying he’s accustomed to turmoil by now. “Of course, I’m monitoring the situation and ready to get out of here super fast if necessary,” he says. “But I don’t want to be the remote corporate CEO that makes decisions about moving people and their families without talking to them. I’m more used to it than most Americans would be.”
  7. How Can Artificial Intelligence Improve Healthcare?, HT Digital Content Services, February 8, 2022, msnUnited News of Bangladesh (UNB).
    • Many people have become concerned that artificial intelligence will someday replace or reduce the necessity for human doctors, particularly in the clinical context. However, new studies and statistics suggest that rather than reducing physician necessity, this tool will likely help and enhance clinical diagnoses and decision making.
    • Many times, patients exhibit many symptoms that might be linked to a variety of disorders based on both hereditary and physical traits, causing a diagnosis to be delayed. AI benefits a practitioner not only in terms of efficiency, but it also gives quantitative and qualitative data based on input feedback, enhancing accuracy in diagnosis, treatment planning, and result prediction.
    • The largest hurdle for AI in healthcare is not determining if the technologies will be sufficiently competent to be beneficial but rather guaranteeing their widespread acceptance in everyday clinical practice. Clinicians may eventually gravitate toward work requiring unique human abilities, activities requiring the greatest degree of cognitive function. Perhaps the only healthcare practitioners who will miss out on AI's potential are people who refuse to collaborate with it.
  8. AIops startup Monq Lab launches free incident control and automation platform, Shubham Sharma, February 9, 2022, VentureBeat.
    • Latvia-based AIops startup Monq Lab has announced the free version of its incident control and automation platform to help enterprises and SMEs proactively support their IT systems.
    • Over the coming weeks, Monq Lab plans to make the product more comprehensive and user-friendly for enterprises by introducing a new configuration item database (CMDB) and a case management subsystem.
  9. Keeping Up With Three Key Technologies That Will Hit Their Stride In 2022, Michael Jackowski, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • SaaS adoption will reach full maturity.
      • Across most industries and certainly in the insurance industry Duck Creek serves, software as a service (SaaS) has become an important part of the new standard of doing business.
    • Low-code tools will change the way software is developed and how software development is taught.
      • Software written in programming languages that became popular over the past 20 years or so is in place at many newer companies that provide innovative products and services, and the developers who work with them will continue to be in demand.
    • Robots aren’t taking our jobs — they’re taking our side.
      • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been building steam rapidly across customer-facing applications, and the trend shows no sign of slowing. Although there were concerns that these tools would replace human interaction, consumer preferences have shown a different path emerging.
      • AI and ML are enabling a fast and accurate means of delivering practical analytics that can influence business systems in real time.
    • But we’ll always need the human factor.
      • The common factor among all three of these trends is that the human factor is still of immense value. The makeup of the workforce may be changing, but people won’t be replaced by lines of code — rather, they’re augmented by tools that help them do their work more efficiently.
  10. Personalization And Context: AI’s Surging Role In Advertising, Emilia Kirk, February 9, 2022, Forbes.
    • For years, brands have been using data to analyze their target audience’s online identity and behavior in order to strategize their advertising efforts. Now, as digital security continues to tighten and consumers become increasingly aware of the information companies can access, behavioral targeting is coming to a slow death. With this in mind, brands need to reevaluate their efforts to generate a sense of trust from their audiences, while delivering relevant ads.
    • AI has come a long way. The technology is constantly learning and evolving, and on a broader business scale, it continues to be a cost-effective solution that automates tasks and enables greater, more informed decision-making.
    • The advertising industry is still a long way from perfecting AI, but the technology has already proven itself to be hugely beneficial across a wide range of industries. From here, AI is poised to continually improve.
