HBR Fact 1. 13 Principles for Using AI Responsibly
    • HBR Summary. The competitive nature of AI development poses a dilemma for organizations, as prioritizing speed may lead to neglecting ethical guidelines, bias detection, and safety measures. Known and emerging concerns associated with AI in the workplace include the spread of misinformation, copyright and intellectual property concerns, cybersecurity, data privacy, as well as navigating rapid and ambiguous regulations. To mitigate these risks, we propose thirteen principles for responsible AI at work.
    • In the tech race, all leaders fear being left behind if they slow down while others don’t. It’s a high-stakes situation where cooperation seems risky, and defection tempting.
    • It’s also important to recognize that the AI arms race extends beyond the developers of large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta. It encompasses many companies utilizing LLMs to support their own custom applications.
    • Soon hundreds of millions of Microsoft 365 users will have access to Business Chat, an agent that joins the user in their work, striving to make sense of their Microsoft 365 data. Employees can prompt the assistant to do everything from developing status report summaries based on meeting transcripts and email communication to identifying flaws in strategy and coming up with solutions.
    • This rapid deployment of AI agents is why Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, recently wrote that, “[p]eople working together with trusted A.I. will have a transformative effect on our economy and society … It’s time we embrace that partnership — and prepare our workforces for everything A.I. has to offer.” Simply put, organizations are experiencing exponential growth in the installation of AI-powered tools and firms that don’t adapt risk getting left behind.

Just Security Fact 1. Regulation is Not Enough: A Blueprint for Winning the AI Race
    • While the world is momentarily concerned with how to best regulate or govern Artificial Intelligence (AI), an important geopolitical contest is emerging over access to and use of AI and AI-related technologies. The implications of this conflict are vast, driving a global redistribution of power to those who can successfully develop and use AI systems from those who cannot.
    • Democratic actors have mobilized to develop a shared understanding for the future of AI based on western values through the creation of global AI initiatives that promote the responsible use of AI. Simultaneously, new regulations are being developed to prevent the use of AI-systems in ways that could undermine free, democratic societies. But these regulations are undermined by states such as Russia and China, which are making significant strides in building an alternative, authoritarian future for AI that is already being exported and adopted abroad.
    • Faced with rising digital authoritarianism, additional action is needed to limit and control access to the world’s most advanced AI technologies. While initial steps toward developing new global regulatory regimes are important, regulation on its own is not enough. Democracies must now focus on winning the race for AI supremacy, which will be determined by technological dominance and digital innovation, ownership of AI infrastructure, and strategic integration of private sector industry.

Fortune Fact 1. True believers, profiteers, and curious creators: Meet the 5 schools of thought that dominate the A.I. debate
    • In just the last month, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times each published over 200 breathless articles pronouncing either the gloomy catastrophic end to humanity or its salvation, depending on the bias and experience of the experts cited.
    • We know firsthand just how sensationalist the public discourse surrounding A.I. can be. Much of the ample media coverage surrounding our 134th CEO Summit last week, which brings together over 200 major CEOs, seized upon these alarmist concerns, focusing on how 42% of CEOs said A.I. could potentially destroy humanity within a decade when the CEOs had expressed a wide variety of nuanced viewpoints as we captured previously.
    • Most A.I. expert voices tend to fall into five distinct categories: euphoric true believers, commercial profiteers, curious creators, alarmist activists, and global governistas.
    • The messaging of these five tribes reveals more about the experts’ own preconceptions and biases than the underlying A.I. technology itself–but nevertheless, these five schools of thought are worth investigating for nuggets of genuine intelligence and insight amidst the artificial intelligence cacophony.

IBM Fact 1. IBM Study: CEOs Embrace Generative AI as Productivity Jumps to the Top of their Agendas
    • The annual CEO study, CEO decision-making in the age of AI, Act with intention, found three-quarters of CEO respondents believe that competitive advantage will depend on who has the most advanced generative AI. However, executives are also weighing potential risks or barriers of the technology such as bias, ethics and security. More than half (57%) of CEOs surveyed are concerned about data security and 48% worry about bias or data accuracy.
    • There is also a disconnect between CEOs and their teams when it comes to AI readiness. Half (50%) of CEOs surveyed report they are already integrating generative AI into products and services, and 43% say they are using generative AI to inform strategic decisions. Yet, just 29% of their executive teams agree they have the in-house expertise to adopt generative AI; only 30% of non-CEO senior executives surveyed say that their organization is ready to adopt generative AI responsibly.
    • The new global study by the IBM Institute for Business Value found that nearly half of CEOs surveyed identify productivity as their highest business priority—up from sixth place in 2022. They recognize technology modernization is key to achieving their productivity goals, ranking it as second highest priority. Yet, CEOs can face key barriers as they race to modernize and adopt new technologies like generative AI.
    • About the study. The IBM Institute for Business Value, in cooperation with Oxford Economics, interviewed 3,000 CEOs from 30+ countries and 24 industries as part of the 28th edition of the IBM C-suite Study series. These conversations, completed from February through April 2023, focused on executives’ perspectives on leadership and business; their changing roles and responsibilities; and CEO decision-making today, including key challenges and opportunities, their use of technology, data, and metrics, and their visions for the future. Insights were also drawn from numerous client conversations including more than a dozen deep-dive interviews with CEOs conducted explicitly for this study from March through May 2023.

McKinsey Fact 1. Unleashing developer productivity with generative AI
    • A McKinsey study shows that software developers can complete coding tasks up to twice as fast with generative AI. Four actions can maximize productivity and minimize risks.
    • Technology leaders aiming to accelerate software development can expect groundbreaking time savings with generative AI. However, they’ll need more than tooling to exploit the full potential of this disruptive technology.
    • Our latest empirical research finds generative AI–based tools delivering impressive speed gains for many common developer tasks (see sidebar, “About the research”). Documenting code functionality for maintainability (which considers how easily code can be improved) can be completed in half the time, writing new code in nearly half the time, and optimizing existing code (called code refactoring) in nearly two-thirds the time (Exhibit 1). With the right upskilling and enterprise enablers, these speed gains can be translated into an increase in productivity that outperforms past advances in engineering productivity, driven by both new tooling and processes.
    • About the research. To understand the impact of generative AI–based tools on developer productivity, we set up a lab with more than 40 McKinsey developers who are located across the United States and Asia and have different amounts of software development experience. This lab will serve as an ongoing test bed to understand developments in the industry, including the impact of new tools and developments in existing tools.

Forbes Fact 1. Executives Not Inclined To Remove Humans From AI Decision-Making
    • Executives are nowhere near ready to put their enterprises on autopilot, and probably never will. That’s the word from a survey of 1,000 executives from around the globe, which finds 93% of business leaders believe it's important for humans to have oversight of AI or machine learning when making significant decisions.
    • There are other concerns about AI at the top levels, the survey, commissioned by Workday and conducted in April and May of this year, shows. Close to eight in 10 executives (77%) are concerned about the timeliness or reliability of the underlying data that will potentially feed their AI systems. On top of that, only 29% said they are “very confident” that AI and machine learning are being applied ethically in business.
    • Executives are seeing business benefits from AI. At least 41% report they have seen better decision-making and next best action business insights, 38% have been able to automating business processes, and 35% say AI has played a role in reskilling or upskilling employees. More than one-third, 34%, say they have achieved higher levels of productivity.

Fortune AI Fact 1. IBM’s HR team saved 12,000 hours in 18 months after using A.I. to automate 280 tasks: ‘We’re spending time on things that matter’
    • In an April op-ed for Fortune, IBM CEO Arvand Krishna argued that A.I. helps employers “tackle the kind of tasks most people find repetitive, which frees up employees to take on higher-value work.” He pointed to IBM, noting that its A.I. use has cut the number of HR professionals performing manual work from 700 to fewer than 50. 
    • In the 10 years since Watson wowed the masses, IBM has developed several A.I. tools designed to help businesses run more efficiently and accurately while maximizing productivity. But the problem this slate of A.I. offerings is meant to solve, IBM says, is a uniquely human one. Nickle LaMoreaux, the firm’s chief human resources officer, says that internally, A.I. has freed employees from back-office administrative work, allowing them to perform more nuanced work requiring human touch points.
    • LaMoreaux says that, in total, IBM’s HR department has saved close to 12,000 hours in the last 18 months by automating systems that previously required back-and-forth exchanges between managers and employees.
    • Across functions, LaMoreaux says, the company now assesses a host of new factors among job candidates: whether they can work alongside A.I. and large language models, ask the right questions, design an A.I. process for their domain, glean the right analysis, and understand what’s worth automating, to begin with. And if they’re short in some areas, they must be capable of continuous learning.
    • “It used to be that you could get a degree, become an expert in something, and it would carry you for an entire decades-long career. The half-life of skills is now shrinking because of new technology,” LaMoreaux says. “Whatever the next thing is, having the ability to continuously learn is the big differentiator for employees, regardless of what industry you’re going into, what job role you’re in, and if you’re early in your career or late in your career. This is going to be a defining skill.”

    • To get a broader sense of which companies and industries are adopting AI The Economist examined data on all the firms in the s&p 500. We looked at five measures: the share of issued patents that mention AI; venture-capital (VC) activity targeting ai firms; acquisitions of ai firms; job listings citing AI; and mentions of the technology on earnings calls. 
    • Because other types of AI could bring benefits for business, our analysis captures activity for all AI, not just the generative wave.
