    3. Bloomberg Fact 1. What’s the H100, the Chip Driving Generative AI?
      • It’s rare that a computer component sets pulses racing beyond the tech industry. But when Nvidia Corp. issued a blowout sales forecast in May to send its market value above $1 trillion, the star of the show was its latest graphics processing unit, the H100.
      • The new data center chip is showing investors that the buzz around generative artificial intelligence — systems that can perform a wide range of tasks at superpowered speed — is translating into real revenue, at least for Nvidia. 
      • Demand for the H100 is so great that some customers are having to wait as long as six months to receive it.
      • The H100, whose name is a nod to computer science pioneer Grace Hopper, is a graphics processor. It’s a type of chip that normally lives in PCs and helps gamers get the most realistic visual experience.
      • Nvidia says the H100 is four times faster than the chip’s predecessor, the A100, at training these so-called large language models, or LLMs, and is 30 times faster when replying to user prompts. For companies racing to train their LLMs to perform new tasks, that performance edge can be critical.
    4. Forbes India Fact 1. How Entropik's AI tech is reinventing consumer research
      • The Bengaluru-based startup is using AI tech to disrupt quantitative and qualitative research across sectors like health care, consumer goods, media and finance.
      • To a layman, consumer research would either mean surveys, focus group discussions or interviews. This requires responses to be either filled in manually or analysed from a group discussion or interview. However, with the onset of artificial intelligence (AI), Bengaluru-based startup Entropik is reinventing these traditional quantitative and qualitative research methods.
      • Founded in 2016, the startup is primarily looking at AI’s application in the consumer research domain using three proprietary technologies—facial coding, eye tracking and voice AI. With large scale clients ranging from P&G and Nestle to ICICI and JP Morgan, Entropik works across sectors such as consumer packaged goods (CPG), health care, media and entertainment, and finance. With a team of close to 250 people, they work with clients across US, Europe, Southeast Asia, India and the Middle East, with 70 percent of its revenue coming from the US and European markets.
      • Brands spend about $120 billion globally on understanding consumer behaviour.
      • With surveys, there is a large sample of about 1,000 people, who give a directional sense of the best choices; this is quantitative data. Focus group discussions and interviews help understand the 'why'; this is qualitative data. Both of which could be time consuming, and not too accurate. The team spent almost four years in building technologies to solve this problem. Currently, the company claims to have 17 approved patents.
    5. msn, The Atlantic Fact 1. Apple Is an AI Company Now
      • Apple is pushing forward with AI in small ways, an incrementalist approach that nonetheless still might be the future of where this technology is headed.
      • Some of the differences between Apple’s approach to AI and that of the other tech companies can be explained by their respective business models. The tech giants don’t all make money in the same way.
      • Apple is a luxury brand, more deeply in the business of making using your computer and phone enjoyable above all else. “So it isn’t surprising that Apple is approaching AI cautiously, with a product-oriented focus,” John Gruber, a longtime Apple follower who runs the technology blog Daring Fireball, said.
      • After more than a decade, autocorrect “fails” could be on their way out. Apple’s much-maligned spelling software is getting upgraded by artificial intelligence: Using sophisticated language models, the new autocorrect won’t just check words against a dictionary, but will be able to consider the context of the word in a sentence. In theory, it won’t suggest consolation when you mean consolidation, because it’ll know that those words aren’t interchangeable.
      • Since ChatGPT debuted last fall, tech leaders have not been very subtle about AI’s potential—for good and for evil. Sam Altman, the CEO at OpenAI, tweeted last month that AI “is the most amazing tool yet created.” The Microsoft founder Bill Gates has called AI “the most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface.” At a Google conference, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said “AI” 27 times in a 15-minute speech. (He’s also been known to say that AI will be “more profound” than fire.)
      • Apple, meanwhile, isn’t even pretending to talk a big game when it comes to AI.
      • The new autocorrect, which will be available in an iOS upgrade later this year, is sort of like a less powerful ChatGPT in your pocket. Apple says the software will be better at fine-tuning itself to how we type, as well at predicting what words and phrases we will use next.
      • When you ask ChatGPT a question, you are accessing the same giant large language model stored on the cloud that everyone else is. But the much smaller and more personalized language model that will now power autocorrect will be living on your iPhone.
    6. Bloomberg Fact 2. AI Leader Proposes a New Kind of Turing Test for Chatbots
      • The question now is whether passing the Turing test even matters anymore. “It’s totally unclear whether this is a meaningful milestone or not,” said Mustafa Suleyman, a founder of DeepMind, now a division of Google, and the founder of Inflection.Ai, a startup making personal AI assistants. “It doesn’t tell us anything about what the system can do or understand, anything about whether it has established complex inner monologues or can engage in planning over abstract time horizons, which is key to human intelligence.”
      • The Turing test, Suleyman argues in his upcoming book, The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century’s Greatest Dilemma, is no longer serving as an inspiration or a meaningful measure of AI. It should be replaced.
      • The book is a meditation on the emerging power of AI, which he argues is crashing like an unstoppable wave over society and will change practically everything.
      • In describing his proposal, Suleyman argues that there’s a misplaced focus in the tech industry on the distant possibility of achieving artificial general intelligence, or AGI: algorithms with cognitive abilities that match or exceed humans’. Instead, he said the more achievable and meaningful short-term goal is what he calls artificial capable intelligence, or ACI: programs that can set goals and achieve complex tasks with minimal human intervention.
      • To measure whether a machine has achieved ACI, he describes a “modern Turing test” — a new north star for researchers — in which you give an AI $100,000 and see if it can turn the seed investment into $1 million.

      • Demand for generative AI-based cybersecurity platforms and solutions is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 22% between 2022 and 2023 and reach a market value of $11.2 billion in 2032, up from $1.6 billion in 2022. 
      • Canalys estimates that more than 70% of businesses will have their cybersecurity operations supported by generative AI tools within the next five years.

      • I spent most of last week at Viva Tech, the big technology trade show in Paris. Unsurprisingly, the hottest topic in the exhibition hall was generative A.I. Elon Musk, whose appearance at Viva Tech was a major coup for the show’s organizers, said A.I. “is probably the most disruptive technology ever.”
      • Musk mentioned Tesla’s work on two A.I.-enabled technologies, self-driving cars and humanoid robots, and said he thought it was these technologies (both of which are a subset of what he called “autonomy”), not anything that Tesla produced today, that explained the company’s $816 billion market cap.
      • Musk said that, in an optimistic scenario, A.I. will usher in “an age of abundance where any goods or services that you want, you can just have.” But he also said even if there were “some sort of A.I. apocalypse, I think I would still want to be alive at this time to see it,” before adding, in a joking aside, “and hopefully not cause it.”
      • Elsewhere at the conference, I heard Nick Thompson, the CEO of The Atlantic who is known for his daily “the most interesting thing in tech” videos on LinkedIn and other social media, opining on A.I. and regulation. He said it remained to be seen whether regulation would be “large and dumb”—a complex web of rules and requirements that would enable regulatory capture by the biggest and best-funded technology players—or “small and dumb,” being too light-touch and enabling harms to proliferate, or “small and smart,” getting the balance just about right.
