Classical Summary of the Article:

The article "Technology Counter-Offensive! Fight Back Against Disruption" from INSEAD Knowledge, authored by Nathan Furr and Daniel Snow, discusses how companies can strategically respond to potentially disruptive technologies¹.

The authors argue that not all new technologies are disruptive and that companies should not fear being swept aside if they do not adopt the latest "revolutionary" technology¹. They use the example of turbine-powered cars, which despite the initial hype, never disrupted the automobile industry¹.

The article presents research on how automobile companies responded when a new fuel delivery system, electronic fuel injection (EFI), threatened to replace carburetors from 1978 to 1992¹. Some manufacturers chose to improve their carburetors (extension strategy), while others opted for a hybrid approach, combining carburetors and EFI systems (bridging strategy)¹. These strategies improved carburetor performance, slowed down the overall switch to EFI technology, and bought valuable time for companies to adapt¹.

The authors suggest that companies facing new, potentially disruptive technologies have a number of options. They can improve their existing technology (extension strategy) or combine the old and new technology into a whole new product, like a hybrid car (bridging strategy)¹. These "counter-offensive" strategies can be quite successful, especially in the early stages when the new technology is still unproven¹.

In conclusion, the article emphasizes that while the threat of disruption is real, companies can fight back against disruption with smart strategies¹.
