What general intelligence means. Artificial general intelligence is commonly defined as a hypothetical form of AI that matches or surpasses human capabilities across virtually all cognitive tasks. Its defining characteristics are three:

1.          Cross-domain adaptability: applying what was learned in one context to entirely new situations.

2.          Autonomous reasoning: setting goals, planning and deciding, not only responding to prompts.

3.          Continuous learning: improving over time and acquiring new skills without being rebuilt.

Where AI stands. No current AI system has general intelligence in this integrated sense. Current systems are remarkably broad in conversation, writing and coding, and can use memory, retrieval and planning tools, but they do not autonomously maintain an integrated, lifelong, self-directed learning process comparable to a human life. Researchers increasingly treat generality as a matter of levels, measured by performance, breadth and autonomy (Morris et al., Google DeepMind, ICML 2024). The debate has intensified. In September 2026, OpenAI’s president, Greg Brockman, said of its GPT-6 Astra model, “I do think we’re there.” Independent evaluators disagree, and an October 2026 analysis in The Conversation concludes that the evidence is inconclusive. The same analysis reports that Astra scored 99.9% on the ARC-AGI-3 benchmark when OpenAI’s own setup preserved its reasoning between requests, against 62.7% through the benchmark’s shared setup, and that intelligence is increasingly a property of a whole system of model, memory, tools and agents. Continuity and the system, not the model alone, make the difference: exactly what the g-f Limitless Growth Equation measures. Major laboratories state that reaching AGI is a long-term goal, and some expect far more capable AI soon; Anthropic’s own IPO filing anticipates AI “far more capable” than today’s (g-f(2)4670).
