ABSTRACT
A great team runs on a shared map of who knows
what. Members know whom to go to for what, and they trust each other’s
expertise.
Harvard Business Review reports what happens to
that map when AI joins the team. The authors surveyed 1,033 U.S. full-time desk
workers on intact project teams across more than 20 industries. AI use raised
the sense that teammates held specialized knowledge. But the more people turned
to AI instead of a teammate, the more trust and coordination eroded.
The authors name it relationslipping: “the
pernicious weakening of a team’s working relationships as its members
substitute AI for each other.”

π genioux GK NUGGET
AI CAN MAKE INDIVIDUALS STRONGER AND THE TEAM WEAKER.
USE AI TO PREPARE THE CONVERSATION, NOT
TO REPLACE IT.
πΌ️ RELATIONSLIPPING IN ONE IMAGE
THE SLIP: DISPLACE →
RELATIONSLIP
Displacement means going to
AI instead of a colleague. It costs a team twice:
1 · A cognitive tax.
Teams lose track of who knows what. Skipped conversations stop updating the
map, and work offloaded to AI hides the colleague’s thinking.
2 · A socioemotional
cost. Trust erodes. Teams second-guess, re-check, and stop relying on each
other’s knowledge. People who feel displaced feel they matter less.
THE ANTIDOTE: PREPARE →
CONNECT
The authors’ four practices:
•
Talk often. Daily contact, especially
asynchronous messages, buffers the damage.
•
Make it safe to ask. Psychological safety
makes asking a colleague feel as safe as asking a model.
•
Share how you use AI. New norms of
transparency, and incentives that reward the team, not only the individual.
•
Prepare, don’t replace. Use AI to
rehearse the hard conversation, then have it.
π THE EVIDENCE
•
Teams where displacement is the norm show a
22.3% drop in team coordination and a 21.9% drop in team trust.
•
Among people who favor teammates over AI, 60%
report high team coordination; among those who favor AI over teammates, 32% do.
•
One in five desk workers acknowledged an
inclination to turn to AI over a teammate. Nearly half (49%) said teammates
displaced them with AI at least some of the time.
•
People with low psychological safety on their
team are more than twice as likely to displace a teammate with AI. People
optimistic about AI are nearly three times as likely.
•
Even among those who displace, daily contact
with the team goes with 28% higher coordination and 19% higher team trust.
•
In an illustration for a 10,000-employee
company, the authors estimate that the extra turnover linked to displacement
could cost more than $25 million.
π₯ THE BOMBSHELL
The authors refuse the easy villain: “we’re
the problem, it’s us.”
AI does not cause relationslipping. The
human decision to displace a colleague does. And the incentives organizations
built, rewarding AI-literate individuals rather than AI-enabled teams, make
that decision look rational.
π± THE g-f READING
In the equation, AI multiplies what the
team brings to it. When AI replaces the relationships between people instead of
strengthening them, the team’s shared human intelligence (HI) weakens even as
each member’s output grows.
The leadership duty belongs to g-f RL: the
authors call on leaders “to re-architect incentives that encourage AI-enabled
teams rather than AI-literate individuals.”

π§ JUICE OF g-f GK
STRONGER INDIVIDUALS ≠ A STRONGER TEAM.
A QUICK AI ANSWER ≠ A CONVERSATION.
AI-LITERATE INDIVIDUALS ≠ AI-ENABLED
TEAMS.
AI THAT PREPARES THE CONVERSATION BUILDS
THE TEAM.
⚖️ EPISTEMIC BOUNDARY
Harvard Business Review supplies: the
survey of 1,033 U.S. full-time desk workers; the concept of relationslipping;
the two costs (cognitive and socioemotional); the figures above; the four
recommended practices; and the turnover cost estimate. The findings come from a
survey and show associations; the authors state that they “have yet to measure
the true causal impact of displacement on employee turnover,” and the $25
million figure is their illustration for a hypothetical company. The authors
also note that AI is not inherently bad for teams: displacement can be
liberating, as when a busy colleague is spared a request.
The following are g-f syntheses:
DISPLACE → RELATIONSLIP and PREPARE → CONNECT as labels; the GK Nugget; the
Juice lines (the third paraphrases the authors’ own contrast); and the reading
of the findings through the equation.
π CONCLUSION
The article ends on a choice, not a technology:
“Human decisions to deepen relationships and connect our augmented capabilities
with the people surrounding us everyday will” solve relationslipping.
AI can make individuals stronger and the team weaker.
The g-f Responsible Leader chooses the team.
USE AI TO PREPARE THE CONVERSATION, NOT TO
REPLACE IT.
