"New World" is used here in the European cartographic sense of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Americas were already home to Indigenous peoples and civilizations long before 1492.

• The goal was Asia. Funded by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Columbus sailed west in 1492 to find a sea route to Asia.
• The landfall was not Asia. On October 12, 1492, he reached an island in the Bahamas. Its Taíno inhabitants called it Guanahani, and Columbus named it San Salvador.
